Junior Vase Cup Match
13 Oct 2007
Aldridge vs Alcester
“We were truly heroic, working our socks off at the breakdown
– our geriatric pack worked themselves to a standstill.”
That wasn’t us of course, that was that other cup-tie taking place yesterday - I was just having a few minutes fantasising - lying back, eyes closed, thinking of England.
Ah well, back to reality. We weren’t
quite as good as that. It was more of the same really. Plenty of honest
endeavour but still lacking the accuracy and continuity to sustain the momentum
that pressurises defences. It was certainly a winnable game and with a 10
– 6 lead at half time there was an optimistic air about the touchline.
And even when Alcester went into the lead early in the second half, with
a try from No 8 Brett Allard, it looked as though we could still snatch
the result. We began to dominate more of the territory but as time ticked
away, we began attempting to force the game and some unnecessary over elaboration
in the backs gifted an interception to the visitors that converted an attacking
opportunity into a defensive one. Scrum half Jim Daffern was on hand to
finish it off, crossing in the corner with the score that turned the game
and the added conversion from Andy Smith essentially put the game beyond
our reach.
Two tries had contributed to our first half lead. A typically determined
lateral run from Ben Pittam took him outside the defence, he then straightened
and a well timed pass gave winger Alex Yates a clear sight to the line and
the opportunity to demonstrate his pace to cross unopposed into the corner.
The second was from an individual bullocking run by scrum half Dean Morris,
which originated at the base of a scrum 22 metres out and took him through
the opposition, just making the line before he was hauled down. Alcester’s
first half tally was limited to two Andy Smith penalties. A try from hooker
Dick Moore right on the final whistle, converted by Smith, added an unfair
reflection to the result.
