League Match – Midlands 5 West (North)

 Birmingham Barbarians 5 pts - Aldridge 22 pts

The general consensus was that it was too hot for Rugby.  It was energy sapping, which meant the game never developed any sort of rhythm.  Although we seemed to hold all the cards throughout and created numerous chances we weren’t very efficient at putting them away. Mid-way through the first-half,  “Forrest” collected a wayward Ba Ba’s clearance, ran it back up to their line, and as he was held, slipped the ball to supporting “Tippo”” who crashed over mid way out.  Mo Harbutt got a second with 5 minutes of the half remaining, finishing off a number of disconnected forward drives with a determined dart for the line. Mark Large converted.

The second half became even more fragmented as we suffered an ever increasing number of casualties which meant it was a continually changing line-up that faced up to the challenge of the home side’s resurgent pack through whose efforts they pulled one score back midway through the half.  Roy Fisher was awarded the touch down close to the posts finishing off a concerted forward drive off an attacking 5 metre line-out.  John Busted converted. This helped to shake out some of our lassitude that the conditions were creating and produced a dominant last 10 minutes resulting in two scores.  Ben Drinkwater squeezed over in the corner off solid forward pressure following a line-out and, with a minute to go, the backs put together a good cohesive move that Dayne Meakin finished off in the corner.
