Cleobury Mortimer vs Aldridge
Key team members lost in transit was not the most auspicious of preparations and it meant we were forced to play without substitutes throughout thus reducing us to 14 men for a period in the first half when Jeff went off with an eye injury. There was plenty of honest endeavour however, and a sterling defence throughout kept our line intact but, to be brutal, apart from a couple of attacking line outs in the first half we never managed or looked like managing to apply any pressure on the opposition try line. The home side had the better of the possession, ran about a lot more and attempted to be more creative but our tackling was solid and unflinching and apart from one sustained period towards the end of the first half, when they laid siege with a succession of 5 metre scrummages, we stood up well. Dave Foster provided a much-needed “rock” at full back, his running from deep and booming clearance kicks were always available when called upon to reverse the direction of play. Tony Kelly and his band of assistants, as always, had a fruitful afternoon with the lineout and Alex Reed’s dual role as back row and stand in prop also deserves a special mention. We finally went down to three penalty goals, two in the first half one in the second, kicked by Cleobury Mortimer’s No10 Shields.
