Dudley Wasps v Aldridge
Not the most auspicious of starts to our new season. We were much the stronger in the tight exchanges and with “Wrongy” winning a major share of the line-out ball we should have been able to dominate the match. Unfortunately the rest of our game was missing. Most of the territorial advantages lay in our favour but support play was spasmodic (fitness?) and the backs lacked fluency and co-ordination preventing us from developing the momentum necessary to apply sustained pressure on the opposition goal line. Both sides were struggling to provide cover defence which meant that there were a lot of spaces out wide which Dudley exploited to full advantage to offset their paucity of possession. We opened the scoring with a try by Alex Yates who fastened on to a wayward defensive kick and showed good pace in running it back into the corner. Dudley responded with tries from centre Craig Docherty and flanker Jamie Hickman, both converted by Roddie Williams. We got one back immediately after the break with a drive over the line from a quickly taken short penalty by Terry Gibbs, converted by Tony Jaep. A second try from Jamie Hickman and a try and two conversions from Nick Biddecome.
