League Match – Midlands 5 West (North)

17th Dec 2011

 FWOE   17pts  Vs   Aldridge   3pts

It was a shame that our recent run of success came off the rails in such an ignominious manner.  No substitutes and only 14 men at the start was no way to defend our hard won league position and it wasn’t until well into the first half that, thanks to a cross city dash by Nick Raybould, that we managed to scrape together a full complement.  But even with these shortcomings the match was there for the taking.  With the aid of a following breeze we had most of the territory in the first half and even when we were shorthanded the forwards were well in command and squandered at least three opportunities when we’d got the ball over the line but failed to get it down.  At the break all we’d got to show for our endeavours was a 3 point lead from a Mark Large penalty.  It was all change in the second half though.  Now with the wind behind them “Ways” began to claim the territorial advantages while we struggled to clear our lines and discover any sort of cohesive game plan to provide us with an attacking platform.  We threatened rarely - Dave Wright crossed but again didn’t get the adjudication but by then “Ways” were back in the game.  Centre Dave Potter crossed close to the post and as we lost composure and discipline, inevitably the penalty count mounted against us and “Ways” scrum-half – Cameron Waghorne, gratefully accepted the Xmas charity and duly slotted four from easy positions.
