League Match-Midlands 5 West North

Old Griffinians v Aldridge
Aldridge made a disappointing start to their
league campaign when they went down 41 – 24 at Old Griffinians. It
was a game of contrasting styles with Aldridge having the forward power
to control much of the possession and territory with Griffs victory owing
much to an enterprising back division with the pace and efficiency that
threatened to break the Aldridge defence whenever they managed to get the
ball. Veteran No 8, Lennie Jaep was not surprisingly Aldridge’s man
of the match with a hat trick of tries, all from using his bulk to crash
through the defence following periods of sustained pressure. Second row
Phil Manders also got a touch down with Mark Large adding two conversions.
Griffs replied with tries from fly-half Simon Dummigan (2), full back Paul
Giles (2), and wingers Paul Malin and Lee Chaney.
Simon Dummigan added four conversions and a penalty. It was an encouraging
performance from the Aldridge pack but a limited one overall. Although half-backs
Dean Morris and Mark Large worked hard, only occasionally did the three-quarters
threaten and defensive naivety was ruthlessly exploited by the home side’s
backs.
