Aldridge vs Harborne
The unbeaten run continues. Another dominating
display by the forwards soon had the visitors try line under pressure. After
just 5 minutes, a pick up by Big Jim, from the base of a 5-metre scrummage,
got him to the line where he was temporarily held but fast arriving support
restored his momentum to get him over for the touch down. Ashley Shingler
added the extra points. We came straight back on the offensive and a quickly
taken penalty by “Forrest”, 15 metres out, caught the Harborne
defence napping and set him off on an outflanking run into the corner for
a fine individual try. It was looking comfortable at this stage but towards
the end of the half, the visitors rallied and were able to do some attacking
of their own. We withstood a series of attacking scrums and penalty moves
and only some quality defending from the backs and forwards alike kept our
line intact.
We had the advantages of slope and elements in the second period and used
them to good effect to confine play to Harborne territory for most of the
half. With the forwards still dominant, a series of 5 metre scrummages had
the visitors pack in considerable disarray. After repeated warnings, the
inevitable penalty-try was awarded which Ashley’s trusty boot duly
despatched over the bar for the extra points. The stream of possession brought
the backs more into the frame and following another period of forward pressure
in the corner, the ball was slickly passed through the hands to the opposite
wing where Ashley Lowe took the opportunity to demonstrate his paces and
outrun the defence into the corner. It was his debut try for the 1st XV
and put the seal on an outstanding individual performance.
