St Leonards vs Aldridge
A lively start by St Leonards caught us napping and had us backed up on the defensive for much of the first half. We held on but couldn’t break out, either with kicks or back moves, to relieve the pressure. St Leonard’s took an early lead when their full back made the extra man in the line and created sufficient overlap for winger Ben Sutcliffe to squeeze into corner. This provided us with a wake-up call, we started to compete and were more on the front foot but alas - just on half time - a dropped ball was hacked on by the home side and centre Ben Sutcliffe won the race to claim the touch down in the corner of the dead ball area.
We had much the better of the second half
and created a number of scoring opportunities. Barney made some effective
runs and broke clear but was stopped short by a high tackle. He took the
penalty quickly and was over the line before the defence could reform. We
continued to press and it began to look as if we might scramble a result
but at the final whistle we’d still not managed to find a way to unpick
the resolute defence being put up by the home side.
