Club Match - 19 Sep 09

Rugeley vs. Aldridge

This was a thumping good win for us against a team that put the double over us last season and are currently playing in the league above us.  It wasn’t a pretty sight though, with the majority of the first half being spent with two evenly matched sides battling to gain the ascendancy.  However, late in the half, order started to ensue from the melee and scoring opportunities began to open up for both sides, aided it must be said, by the defences appearing to go AWOL at crucial moments.  The home side opened the scoring with a try between the posts from scrum half Billy Williams, converted by No10 Andy Moorcock.  We immediately recovered some of the deficit with an Alex Yates penalty and then took the lead right on the break when Richard Tipton drove over after a brief period of forward pressure on the home side’s line.  Alex added the extra points to give us a 10 -7 lead at half time.

Ben Pittam had a good afternoon scoring a brace of tries with some determined running that opened up yawning gaps in the defence and cleared pathway to the line.  Alex Yates converted both.  Not to be out done, Rugeley flanker Matt Willis also grabbed a pair that tallied up  to leave us with a 24 – 17 lead with 15 minutes remaining. An exchange of penalties by Moorcock and Yates maintained the points difference and right at the death, man of the match Adam Reed, fast following up a well flighted kick ahead, took full advantage of some indecisive defence by wresting the ball over the line to claim the touchdown.  Alex once more provided the extra points.
