League stragglers Stone had very few answers to our much more business like performance. Playing with a confidence that had been absent during previous weeks and perhaps mindful of last seasons nil - nil draw, the forwards took an early grip on the set pieces and second phase alike, which we never looked like relinquishing. An early try from lock Eddie O’Neill, off the back of a 5-metre scrum, started the scoreboard ticking over and a surfeit of possession meant that the backs could afford to become more ambitious. Centre Trevor Lowe crossed out wide and typically rumbustious efforts from flanker Lennie Jaep and No8 Alex Reed plus three conversions from full back Alex Yates gave us an unassailable looking 26 points lead at the break.
A bit of complacency at the beginning of the second half provided Stone with some optimism and their best spell of the match that led to winger Rob Eccles scoring in the corner. (A look at the records suggests that this was their first try of the season – no wonder he was awarded super-hero status afterwards). Our lethargy was luckily temporary and we soon re-gained control. A slick three quarter movement was finished off in style by “man of the match” Yates who went over between the posts - converted Anthony Jaep. Another barging run from Reed right on the final whistle gave him his second try and a further contribution of the conversion and an earlier penalty from Yates completed the scoring.
