Aldridge Vs Stourport
The frost in the pitch contributed to a scrappy game that produced two tries apiece with the difference between the two sides being the 3 penalties provided by the boot of Stourport’s No 10 Lee Philp. The visitors appeared the sharper side throughout but we had sufficient possession, which if used more effectively, could have produced a different result. Trying to run from deep positions proved to be unproductive early on and we should have shown a bit more tactical nous by putting more boot to ball to establish territorial platforms before attempting anything too ambitious. The outcome was that, territorially, we only threatened twice and significantly scored on both occasions. After 15 minutes Eddie Chikowore went blind off a scrum, chipped ahead which was picked up and fed inside to “Wrongy” who charged the line with a couple of defenders hanging off him. Alex Yates converted. Ironically, the second came off one of the few kicks into the corner. The opposition conceded a penalty and from the ensuing 5-metre scrum, Barney went blind and a sweet pass squeezed “Forrest” over just inside the flag. It was 7 – 6 to Aldridge at the break. Stourport regained the lead early in the half with another Philp penalty and a try from flanker Rod Phillips who finished off an orthodox backs move which originated from a lineout. Their second try came from prop Steve Perrea, deep in injury time, who was at the centre of a concerted forward maul that we failed to defend. Philp added the conversion.
