This was a bit of a fixture miss-match and the score says it all. We came second by a large margin and, apart from a determined first quarter, were on the back foot for most of the match. There are some excuses of course. There were a number of enforced team changes after last weeks successful outing and we were a man short for the second half, when injured fly-half Ashley Shingler went off at the break. It was also a hot afternoon but all-in-all it was not a good day at the office for us.
The start was reasonable enough with some good defensive work, especially in the backs, managing to keep the lid on things for the first 20 minutes during which we got our only score - a penalty from Ashley. But slowly Sutton’s pace about the field and fitness inevitably started to stretch our defence and our visitor’s half of the scoreboard began ticking over with increasing regularity. It’s probably prudent to gloss over the rest of the details. Mark Large was awarded “M O T M” for his competitiveness round the base of the scrum and making an enforced switch to fly-half. Ben Pittam's contribution in the backs earned him the 2 points and Adam Reed was in the points again for his dual roles firstly as a flanker and then coping with the switch to scrum half.
We’re away next week with a club fixture versus Rugeley.
