A determined team effort plus some fine individual performances deservedly provided us with the result and brought Warley’s unbeaten league run to an end. It was a hard fought contest and rarely a thing of beauty but it was a compelling struggle and the narrow margin at the end reflected the closeness of the encounter.
Playing up the slope in the first half we soon found ourselves under pressure with the defence looking tentative and vulnerable early on and when, after just 7 minutes, the Warley No 10, Dan Hemmings strolled over untouched through the yawning gap that was offered, things were looking ominous.
We withstood further periods of pressure but slowly settled and by some astute kicking and pacey following up began to gain more of the territorial spoils. From one such sortie half way through the half, Ben Drinkwater dispossessed the opposition catcher, took the ball on and then passed outside to a rapidly following up Alex Yates who side stepped the defenders and crashed over in the corner. Warley came back at us with some determined running down the flanks which, with 5 minutes of the half remaining, culminated in winger Anthony Hughes squeezing over in the corner.
In the second-half, aided by some accurate kicking from No 10 Mark Large, Aldridge played the slope well and with the visitors struggling to find a way out we began to dominate the territorial tally and set up attacking positions. Alex Yates was on target with a penalty after 18 minutes, which reflected the balance of play and brought Aldridge firmly back in contention.
With 15 minutes left an unpromising looking three-quarter play scrambled the ball out to winger Jake Randall who used his considerable pace to outmanoeuvre the defence and score midway out. Yates added the extra points to provide a 5-point margin, which we never looked like relinquishing despite a late flurry by the visitor’s.
