Rugby Match Report  - League Match Midlands 5 West (North)

 (Replay)

23 January 2010

Wheaton Aston Nil   Vs   Aldridge  34 points

It seems a long time ago - before the freeze - but if you can remember the last time we played, the match was abandoned in the 65th minute due to an injured referee. It was most illogically decreed that the fixture should be replayed.  This was the replay.

There was a touch of the déjà vu’s about the proceedings.  Fielding arguably a stronger side than the first encounter, the forwards got a grip right from the start.  It was a grip that they never looked like relinquishing.  Winning more than a fair share of the possession at the line-out, tight scrummages and in the loose, meant that we controlled the match throughout with the opposition having no answers to the robust forward driving play, ably led by Jim Arnold, that formed the heart of our game plan. The forward domination is reflected in the score sheet. In the first half, No 8 Lennie Jaep crossed twice by picking up from the base of 5 metre scrums and in the second half, substitute No 8, Dave Wright repeated the dose, similarly touching down twice from off the base of 5 metre scrums.

It’s fair to say that at no time during the match was our line ever under any threat and in hindsight we probably should have involved the backs in a more expansive game and scored a few more points.  As it was they always had plenty in reserve to snuff out any opposition sorties and by way of consolation, Ben Pittam, making the most of a tactical kick from Alex Yates, used his speed to cross in the corner.  Alex Yates had opened the scoring with a penalty barely a minute into the match and went on to add three conversions to his tally. Man of the match “Forest” also made his usual rampaging contribution to the proceedings.  It was a good all round solid team performance that provided a much-needed loosener for the reciprocal part of the league programme that’s still to come.

(Incidentally the final score doubles the points differential of the first encounter – it’s an ill wind etc)
