Rugby Match Report - League Match Midlands 5 West (North)
12th Dec 2009
We were in the 66th minute and sitting comfortably on a 22 points to 5 lead when the referee pulled up injured, couldn’t continue and had to abandon the match. The rules dictate that the league organising committee decide whether the result stands or the fixture has to be replayed. We wait the decision with baited breath.
The pre-match preparation didn’t auger well either. We only had 12 men on the field when we lined up to face the kick-off. The 13th man arrived in the nick of time and we were reliably informed that the cavalry were on their way. Despite this we made a determined start, efficiently got the ball into the home side’s territory, won a penalty and Alex Yates had added three points to the scoreboard before 2 minutes had lapsed. The cavalry duly arrived and now with a full complement, a robust display from the forwards took a control that never looked like being conceded. Although there were not many free flowing three-quarter movements, the backs made up for it by putting up unwavering defensive display throughout and had enough pace to create insecurity amongst the opposition fielders’ when chasing kicks ahead.
Fifteen minutes in, Lennie Jaep inexorably picked up at the back of a 5 metre scrum and crashed through the defence to touch down close to the posts then, ten minutes latter, Eddie O’Neill finished off a short penalty move in similar fashion, crossing out wide. Yates converted both to provide a comfortable 17 points to nil cushion at the break.
We seemed to lose a bit of composure in the second half but still managed to conjure up a good try for Jake Randall, who made the most of a tentative service by using his speed to easily round the cover to score in the corner. We never looked like relinquishing the lead which probably contributed to an attack of complacency breaking out and a conceding of territory. This produced a flourish from the home side who moved the ball along their backs, resulting in full back Jim Freeman squeezing in just inside the flag. This turned out to be a consolation try - and the last play - as the referee called time at this juncture.
