Match Report - League Match

The defensive effort was magnificent and the spirit remained high throughout but that unfortunately was essentially as far as it went. Apart from the initial encounters, the possession was scrappy from all phases which prevented us from developing any sort of consistency with which to pressurise the opposition. This progressively handed them the initiative which they used to good effect in keeping us on the back foot for extended periods. That we held out and only conceded one try was a tribute to the defiant defence thrown up to protect our line. There were plenty of last-ditch tackles with attacks coming via the backs and the forwards who used the rolling maul to good effect. We managed to absorb everything that the opposition threw at us until the last five minutes when our line was finally breached by centre James Hitchen who claimed the touch down off the back of a forward drive. Scrum half Ian Carr converted.
We’d opened the scoring after seven minutes with an Alex Yates penalty during a rare sortie into opposition territory. Although the home side had prolonged periods of territorial advantage, the lead was maintained until just short of the break when they eventually equalised with a Ian Carr penalty and then went ahead right on the whistle with a long range effort from fly-half Nigel Brooks. Alex Yates slotted a consolation penalty which reduced the deficit right at the end.
