The decision to “keep it in the forwards” was the right one and paid early dividends when after just four minutes Richard Tipton finished off a rolling maul to get the touchdown close to the posts. Alex Yates converted then added a penalty and we were looking comfortable. We applied plenty of pressure but couldn’t make those last couple of metres to the line - and perhaps started to try too hard. A loose pass in the opposition 22 was snapped up by their pacey backs who quickly translated it into a converted try at the other end, bringing them right back into the game. This quickly sent us scuttling back to “keeping it tight” and right on the break “Tippers” once again obliged by converting a rolling maul, which had developed off a line-out, into points. Alex added the extras.
In the second period, we carried on where we’d left off– Jim Arnold, after a minute, bludgeoned his way through mid-way out and, following a further period of laying seige, we unpredictably moved the ball swiftly to the opposite side which provided an overlap for winger Jacob Holding to cross in the corner for a classic try. With scrum-half debutante Lea Stokes orchestrating things around the scrum and Eddie O’Neill making a reasonable impression of a fly-half we were well in control with Eddie himself deciding to get in on the act with a bullocking 30-metre charge to the line through the heart of the opposition. Yates converted both Jim’s and Eddie’s efforts. With a few minutes remaining and with the home side still struggling for worthwhile possession the game was out of their reach but us, being a charitable organisation, lost focus and gave their backs another couple of opportunities to demonstrate their paces. Two tries, one converted, provided them with a generous consolation.
