Aldridge’s unbeaten run in the NM Vase competition was brought to a juddering halt by Evesham in last Saturday’s encounter. Evesham play their rugby a couple of leagues higher than us and it showed from the off that this could prove to be a long afternoon for us. And so it was.
After surviving their initial offensive we shifted the ball down field - a couple of well struck Alex Yates penalties and we were in a six-point lead after 12 minutes. That didn’t last long however as the visitors soon demonstrated that with pace out wide to spare, accompanied by some persistent support play, they could stretch our cover defence at will. They ran in five tries, three converted to give them a 9 – 31 lead at the interval – Alex Yates contributing a third penalty to our score line late on. We tightened things up a little in the second half and even created some opportunities of our own but didn’t manage to collect any rewards and our mistakes, dropped balls, wayward passes etc, were snapped up and punished by the opposition.
They went on to post a further four tries – three converted – to make the final tally 9 - 57.
