Good win against a tough side
Aldridge played their best rugby this season to beat a strong Church Stretton side. Missing a number of key players Aldridge began the game on the front foot thanks to some excellent play by their forwards.
The home side capitalised on their early pressure to score a superb try thanks largely to an heroic run by lock Dan Lastun who was supported by Lee Stokes and Adam Reed who grounded the ball for the opening score. This was converted by the reliable Alex Yates.
The visitors came straight back and were awarded a penalty for offside which was kicked by Bradburne to make the score 7-3.
Aldridge's forwards again drove the visitors back and ended with a 5 metre scrum. This resulted in a penalty try when one of the Church Stretton pack dived on the ball too early after Aldridge had secured good ball and were driving to the line. Again Alex Yates kicked the conversion.
There was a pattern emerging as Church Stretton again scored a simple penalty for an infringement by the Aldridge pack in the loose. Bradburne slotted the straightforward kick. The score was now 14-6.
As half time approached there were yellow cards in separate incidents for Tom Ward for the visitors and Alex Yates for Aldridge. This seemed to do little to change the pattern of play because the next score was a try for Aldridge again scored by scrum half Adam Reed. In the absence of Alex Yates Mark Large scored the conversion to leave the half time score 21-6.
The second half was a story of early attrition from the visitors which saw them score two tries. The first was from an interception in their own 22 by Sam Hill, converted by Chard. The second try was the culmination of a superb backs move by Church Stretton playing their best rugby of the game. Dan Harris got the final touchdown but the conversion was missed to leave the score at 21-18.
Aldridge stiffened their resistance and began to play some rugby of their own with another lung busting run from Dan Lastun the highlight. There were no further scores although Church Stretton missed a penalty that would have evened the scores with the last kick of the game.
Aldridge travel to Market Drayton next Saturday.
