With promotion still a mathematical possibility this penultimate league fixture versus visitor’s Whittington was a must win game. We made a cracking start. The forwards gained control from the off and the resulting stream of possession was used to such devastating effect that the game was done and dusted by the interval. Determined ball carrying off the back row coupled with speedy and accurate offloading gave the visitor’s no time to settle and scores were inevitable. We’d posted 7 tries and 3 conversions by half time giving us a 41-point to nil lead at the break. With the slope, breeze and sun now in our favour it looked like it was going to be a long afternoon for the visitors but our momentum surprisingly stalled giving them the opportunity to re-group and take a bigger share of the encounter. They had more of the territory in the second half and on several occasions had us backed up against our line. We’d taken our foot off the gas big time and began to lose composure but the defence still remained sound and the line intact. We posted the only score of the second half – mid way through - when Jacob Holding fly hacked from half way out and outstripped the defenders to claim his second score of the match. Alex Yates converted. Final score – Aldridge 48 pts – Whittington Nil
