Aldridge got their league campaign off to a flying start when they visited near neighbours Birmingham Barbarians for last Saturday’s fixture. With eight converted tries it was a comfortable victory with the result never being in doubt but it was a bit of a staccato performance as we struggled to develop continuity and momentum throughout. Some of this was due to the stubborn resistance put up by the home side’s defence but also to stoppages from numerous infringements and errors. When we did get the ball we looked confident and sharp in attack and strived to move it wide at every opportunity. Prop Eddie O’Neill opened the scoring after six minutes with a try between the sticks and then went on to complete his hat trick in the second half. Full back Alex Yates and scrum-half Adam Reed each got a brace and a single offering from centre Dan McKenna completed the tally. All were converted by Alex Yates. Right at the end, Barbarians won a penalty close to the Aldridge line which was quickly taken by flanker Josh Wellings who charged through the defence for a consolation try.
