Aldridge beaten by Warley

Both packs slugged it out throughout to gain the ascendancy in this league fixture and although by the end our forwards were in control it was the quick thinking Warley backs who had maximised their opportunities to grab the spoils. They made the best of starts, scoring almost from the off with centre Cash Redding posting the first of his two first half tries with a direct run through a relaxed looking Aldridge defence. Full-back Scott Boulton converted but we hit back pretty swiftly with a well worked try into the corner by winger Nick Yates and some 10 minutes later an Alex Yates penalty put us into the lead which we threatened to increase until a second effort from Redding, just before the break, again converted by Boulton restored the lead back to the home side. This was further increased 2 minutes into the second period when the bounce of a speculative kick-ahead into the Aldridge dead ball area beat the defence and was pounced upon by a determinedly following-up No10 Tony Bekker. We made a rapid riposte though, squeezing winger John Phipkin into the corner and a second Alex Yates penalty made further inroads into the deficit.
It was 19 – 16 with 10 minutes left and we were once more pressing for the result when Warley made a rare sortie into our territory. From a lineout some fancy footwork by scrum half Marcus Taylor appeared to hypnotise us, opening up a clear run in to the try line. Boulton converted and with time running out the Warley lead was beginning to look solid. Another big effort from our forwards steamrollered play up to and over the Warley line which culminated in flanker Lennie Jaep being awarded the touchdown as time ran out.
